    DEAF-FRIENDLY GUITAR WORKSHOP

Tom is an Ipswich-based composer and music tutor who is passionate about inclusive education and specialises in Deaf music tuition.

As the dad of a young Deaf boy who loves music, he has a deep appreciation of the fact
that music should be accessible to all.

For the last 6 years Tom has provided guitar lessons tailored to Deaf
students both privately and in Heathlands School For Deaf Children. He uses a variety of accessible methods including BSL, visualisers, sign song and his own adapted forms of notation.

At the start of 2025, Tom released a first-of-its-kind Deaf-friendly beginner’s guitar course called ‘Six String Signs’. This course was featured in the popular UK Deaf blog
‘Limping Chicken’ and was also used further afield, for example by the
University of Toronto, Canada who used it to inspire Deaf music
    education.

Tom’s workshop provides a fun and easy introduction to playing a basic
Rock song: ‘Smoke On The Water’. BSL and an audio visualiser will be
used throughout. Students will learn a few key guitar terms and then
strum a ‘power-chord’ on the electric guitar along to sign song. This
workshop is a highly visual way of experiencing the joy of Rock music
and a chance to have a Deaf-friendly ‘jam’ with Tom!
